14 February 2012 Trail Dynamics on West Cadillac

Dodging the drizzle all afternoon, today's photos begin with a review of the inslope problem just east of C26, some berm & drain work by Woody at the East Overlook, tweaks around C22, marking for armoring-in-place at The Root (just west of C21), and further marking for choices at the proposed wall ride just west of The Root. Ed marked specific areas with spray paint in the sections where work will occur. A bit further along, we get into areas where work actually occurred today. C18 - initial shots just show marking before the work commenced. "Terraformed" berms and drains were put in here today to fix a two-way fall line corner. C17 - awesome decking between trees with dirt wall option around it. Berms and drains applied to fix this two-way fall line as at C18. Tim Murphy (Nessie designer) did major volunteer work on the decking with the Trail Dynamics guys. After checking out these two sites, I head over to have a look at yesterday's work near C16. The little bridge on the eastmost highside option got armoring applied to protect its edges. Then back to view C17 and C18 work. Later, Woody flagged a new highside option straddling C19. The roots will remain in the original lowside "Trainspotting" line. The highside option will allow a swoopier and smoother bypass. Take your pick. We then head over to see the armoring-in-place done below The Root to save it from further decay. Nothing at all was lost there challenge-wise. Take a look how The Root appeared on 11Nov08 here and here. Note how much soil was lost below The Root in just over 3 years. It's now locked in place as a more challenging option than its roll over status in 2008. We wrap up today's photo tour back at the C17 decking project with Ed using Todd's old school rigid singlespeed to test ride. Official map for this park. • After I talked to Ed about some insloping on a couple sections, he marked the areas for tweaking at the end of Monday's work. We're between C27 and C26. They'll outslope here to force water downslope rather than leave it trapped to erode the backslope/tread junction.

  • Woody did a bit of cleanup in front to the East Overlook. More importantly, he cut a drain and berm in front of the armored drop down to the cars (where the bike is parked).

  • Still moving westward, we're now above C18. I spent a lot of time in this area over the summer influencing water off the trail. Later today, the guys will put a major berm and drain fix on it.
