17 May 2010 Trail Dynamics on Munson Hills

A few (hundred) snaps and 3 videos from a 17 May 2010 visit to the Trail Dynamics crew's work at Munson Hills Trail's north section. Descriptive text continues... Videos are from crude helmetcam with 170° angle of view. I'm on a singlespeed 29er with no suspension - please forgive the vibration. Download and read Valerie Naylor's trail assessment. Optional experimental link to the same file. Please let me know if you have any trouble accessing the file via that experimental link. 25 May 2010 photos here. • This segment is the one the crew was working on when I arrived 17 May. Video begins a bit south of Tall Pine Shortcut's north terminus and rolls downhill 310m. It's the section of trail that had the rubber edged water bars.
This segment is referred to as "26F" in Valerie's trail assessment. See map in appendix C, p.iii.

  • For this video, I began at the north bench. That's the north terminus of Tall Pine Shortcut at its intersection with the Munson Hills loop. I rode 640m trending downhill and westward along Munson Hills Trail.
This segment is referred to as "3E" in Valerie's trail assessment. See map in appendix C, p.iii.

  • 20 May 2010 map
Map created by combining this and this GPS track.
From parking area, entrance trail has been revised. Uppermost white arrow indicates where entrance now takes you up to the Tall Pine Shortcut/Munson north bench intersection. It makes more sense, and takes pressure off Paper Cup Trail. Some concern has been indicated about the section of PC passing between two ponds. That section of PC may be closed.
Other small white arrow indicates major reroute on Tall Pine Shortcut.
As of 20 May, all work has been restricted to the East "side" of Munson, using TPS as the divider between East and West.
Twilight Zone Trail is south of this map, with East and West Connectors partially shown. Got all that?

  • I went westward downhill from the north terminus of Tall Pine Shortcut to the end of the reroute around the pond. Then shot this helmetcam video of the 540m return trip back uphill to the north bench.
I'm a bit confused, but I think this segment is referred to as "23A and 24F" in Valerie's trail assessment. See map in appendix C, p.iii.

  • 17 May 2010 GPS track of my meanderings riding in and out from the parking lot, getting shots of the construction process, walking around one of the adjacent ponds, and riding 3 completed segments for the helmetcam videos. All of this activity is in just the northeast corner of Munson Hills Trail, plus north and east to the parking lot.

  • One of two "Wolverines" being used to transfer base material to trail segments.
It's actually a Canycom S25A "Heavy-duty Carrier with 180° Pivoting Dump Box." In other words, it can transfer material exactly where we want it.

  • Here you get a look at the piles of base filling the excavated sections of trail. They will be shaped appropriately for each specific location, bit by bit, then compacted and finished. The finished and dried base appears close to the original sandy grey when complete, as you'll see.
