J. R. Alford Greenway Archive

A collection of photos and info from the early days of Alford Greenway. Oldest to newest - Christmas 2000 to October 2003 - after the maps. SEE ALSO the perimeter tour gallery and photo tour of all major fields. Official park map (~8MB .pdf) for J. R. Alford Greenway. J. R. Alford Management Plan, (~2MB .pdf) officially released January 2003. That's me on page 4 (.pdf p11). This online official version of the management plan does not include 9 valuable maps from my September 2002 draft version. I scanned and uploaded the maps from my draft version. They're viewable (below) beginning here. J. R. Alford Greenway 2013-2023 management plan. THIS SITE is private property, and doesn't necessarily represent any other individual or organization. • Soon after setting up my first photo site, I was frustrated with the lack of area trail maps. In 2001 - the pre-Google Earth and simple GPS days - I started posting park and trail maps on the old Club Photo site. Procedure was:
1) Acquire aerial photo print of desired area from DOT.
2) Scan it.
3) Add colorful dots where I think the trails are and label with Comic Sans.
4) Upload.
It's baaaaaack! Actually, never left.
My field names - including Pterodactyl - are used in the 2003 J. R. Alford Management Plan. The Spine Road is depicted with green dots. (The 5th Field segment of the Spine Road is now mowed differently than depicted on this map.) Distances are for a clockwise perimeter. This map pre-dates the doubletrack added ~2003-4 east of the West/East field, Little Cove, and Around the Bend, doubletrack added east and north of the 5th Field, and 2011 singletrack extension added to Coupe de Ville. "HT" stands for horse trough, probably removed long ago for mosquito abatement.

  • Looks like the old "V" split for Coupe de Ville Trail. Jeff (left) standing on the highside, Rolando lowside. Highside CdV veered up to between F1 and F2 then weaved down through the F2 pine grove to the F3 turnaround, lowside parallels the RR tracks.

  • Looks as though we've run Coupe de Ville highside first from the V, then cut out to the SE corner of F1. This would be looking ~NW before there was a parking corral.

  • Coupe de Ville ditch, returning on the loop via the low side. Back in 2001, this ditch was described by an overconcerned committee member as being 10 feet deep. That would make Jeff 20 feet tall.

  • I test "The Mousetrap" as Jeff snaps the shot. Mousetrap - long gone - was on Coupe de Ville Trail maybe 500m from the west terminus.
