Panhandle Championship 5K/3K Course Tour

3Km was abandoned after 2006, reverting to the 2M for the middle school race. My preference is to never again have kids run Imperial distances (barring the occasional mile). 3Km should replace the 2M. But I'm not in charge here! For 2007, the 3Km was not run. It was a 2M (turned out to be ~180m long, more like 2.1M). The 5Km course was revised at the 2M point. It ended up being ~40m long. As of 2009, that 5Km revision after the 2M point is no longer used. Back to the old way. There is a modification to how the runners get onto the median. And a concrete sidewalk along the north rock wall may now be used. See the video! Due to these revisions, ignore the 3Km tour beyond ~1200m. The 5Km tour works till you get to ~2M. Sorry 'bout that. I don't know that I'll be driving back to Marianna to "fix" these course tours. GPS tracks (for mapping purposes, NOT measurement!) are posted here: http://trail.motionbased.com/trail/activity/4267444 (2M course from 2007) http://connect.garmin.com/activity/4911319 (5Km course) http://connect.garmin.com/activity/17031041 (2009 2M race lead) An every 50 meter photo tour of the bullet-fast October Marianna HS cross country classic. New 2006: a 3K for MS types. 5K is a clockwise loop. It is essentially unchanged from most past years. Changes in fencing in the stadium area are responsible for minor revision. THIS IS THE SIMPLEST COURSE VARIANT YET. 3K starts anticlockwise on the 5K course (backward, if you prefer), and is an out and back. After the 1435m turnaround, the 3K precisely follows the 5K course to the finish. Print the map and follow along. (The old map from the 3M course is posted at the end of this gallery.) Be aware that these photos were shot with the equivalent of a rather wide-angle 27mm lens. What that means is, "things are closer than they appear!" • Panhandle 5Km video tour from the start to 2500m, shot 24 Oct '09.
I shot the helmetcam video during my post-event re-measurement ride as the MS 2M was wrapping up.
During the video, note me shortcutting the turn onto the west road at ~320m. Pinflags had been removed - oops.
INCLUDING that shortcut I got between 4.98 and 4.99Km on two calibrated odometers. Garmin's software treated the GPS track as 4.96Km. Add the shortcutted distance and we're right on 5.00Km.
Other software will come up with a different number. GPS tracks are unreliable, though almost always short of reality. NEVER rely on one for accurate measurement!

Print it out, and follow along.
North is to the RIGHT.

I know, an earlier map version I'd posted (and printed) read "2500K" instead of 2500m at the Halfway point.
I made a muh . . . muh . . . I was wro . . . wro . . . so sue me.

  • NOTE: I do not know if this is an accurate portrayal of the 2008+ course!! It depicts a revision after the ~2M point.
I threw this together 22 Oct09 for a Google Earth look at the course. I'm scheduled via Marianna HS Coach Allan Gibson to do bike race lead, walkie-talkie report, etc., at the 24Oct09 Panhandle races.
From this 20 October 2007 GPS track.
Or try the GPS player to follow the route start to finish.

  • The Pugsley's centered at the north end line of the Marianna HS football field. We'll head the length of the field, taking a right turn around the left side of the scoreboard.
Veterans likely know the finish line (5K and 3K) is to the left, in front of the grandstands.

Here's that right turn. Next thing we aim for is the left edge of that fence, ~160m.

  • Bike's at 350m. I've backed up behind the turn, which was at 320m. The actual turn is "outside" (left) of the sprigs of grass peeking through the dirt. We've since installed a control point in that dirt for consistency.
We're now going to head north for nearly one mile.
This old asphalt section lasts for only 150m or so.
