16 & 30 July Cuban MagLab Higher Ground Beginner Ride

The Cuban MagLab Higher Ground Beginner Rides: You need not be Cuban, MagLab, Higher Ground, nor Beginner to participate. Show up and ride with us! 16 July: We rode from the Higher Ground MTB shop through Fern Trail, Tom Brown's Goose Pond (paved bike-ped), Cadillac, Loblolly and Lafayette Heritage Trail. Similar to the 11 June ride minus the Bog Loop and adding Lower/East Cadillac. Something over 15M/25Km for the main group. Longest ride yet, after decreasing distances in the previous weeks. But the quality was always there. These are some of the "roughest" photos yet. I was even more careless than usual. It's not a good sign when I'm: 1) attempting to snap photos while rolling/pedaling, 2) shooting video and snapping stills simultaneously. You get your money's worth around here. 30 July: WAIT! There was a ride? We thought it got canceled! What happened? There was a cloud somewhere up there, you know, in the sky, so nobody else joined me for what turned into an 8.5M ride. Wednesday (the Jabberwocky) and I took a relaxing roll through Lafayette Heritage Trail, Loblolly, East Cadillac highside, along Lake Piney Z, then back on the multiuse to the BMX track. Here's a slide show. Here's a GPS track. Follow virtually along my solo ride here. Let the page fully load, then press the play button. Btw, during the ride, there was zero rainfall and lots of sun. This is the third time there was a cancellation (official or otherwise) when the weather was fine at go time. Next time, come on out! 23 September jaunt through Maclay Gardens State Park here. 17 September mini gallery of our Piney Z mudfest is here. 10 September Munson's westside action is here. 3 September action is here. 27 August ride gallery is here. 20 August ride gallery is here. 13 August stuff is here. 6 August ride gallery is here. 23 July ride was canceled for a MagLab student going away party. 9 July ride photos are here. 2 July ride was canceled (weather call). 25 June ride photos are here. 18 June ride photos are here. 11 June ride gallery is here. 4 June ride was canceled (weather call). • I attempt to shoot video and snap stills simultaneously, guaranteeing that I bungle both.
That's not to say if I carefully compost a shot I won't screw that up too. Wait - did I just type "compost" a shot? That explains a lot.
This is a fun spot on Fern Trail just east of the intersection with Victory Garden Drive. I'd chopped a highside option here (right) in the last year or so. Watch what happens later in the clip when some folks decide to sneak along the original root-strewn line closer to the creek (left).

  • No, I don't know why this video is showing up out of order.
"Manual" Todd, Jose, and LT have some fun off the Hill of Death's drop option. Note that the helmetless LT is riding the most primitive bike and sails the farthest.
Next time I get closer, rather than zooming from way back.

  • Video clip: Most of the gang leaving the Higher Ground MTB shop. I missed getting Mike into the video. A couple others (Neil and Miriam Dimacali) caught us a bit later on Fern Trail.

  • Track of my solo 30 July ride.
Note that I took nothing technical, so as to demonstrate an (alleged) wet day beginner friendly ride.

  • 30 July SOLO No Cuban No Beginner Ride:
I receive an "It's raining and I'm scared" phone call from Jose in the hour before the ride. Sky's blue over my head at 6:30, but there are no takers. So a mudguard equipped Wednesday and I do a solo ~8.5M ride. Here's a slide show sampler!

  • This is an assemblage of GPS tracks showing pretty much what we rode 16 July. It includes a section of the East Fern Bog Loop and Polos (center left) that we didn't ride.
